Cinemisto started as a personal project to look at my favorite movies through cinematography. While that will continue, I wanted to next bring in a study of short films in particular. I see a gap in the publishing, curation, and exploration of interesting short films. There are certain sites that feature this format, but they never really go in-depth or interview the people who make them. That was also part of the motivation for this new featured aspect of Cinemisto, to actually have a conversation with those behind the work.
While feature films are incredible and undeniably crucial, there's no reason why the art of the short film should not be appreciated in its own right. Shorts may be made by people just getting into film. Some may be trying to showcase their talents to make a feature film later. Some, however, just want to use the short film format as a storytelling device. And then you get established directors (such as Wes Anderson) who like to make occasional shorts. No matter the reason, they all have their own merit.
You can send submissions to cinemisto@gmail.com of either you're work or recommendations of what you've seen. This is a project by Jack Sommer.
